With the school year’s start on the horizon, the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing is working to ensure that every student has the supplies needed for a good year. This year’s Backpack and School Supply Drive, the fifth organized by APAH, will give backpacks and necessary school supplies to roughly 250 students, officials with the group said.

The supplies go to children in affordable housing who otherwise may not have the means to afford them. Last year’s drive was able to adequately supply all the students in need by the start of the school year, a press release said.

While the supplies go to K-12 students, demand is higher among students in elementary schools, as the there are more young children in affordable housing, said Liz McElwee, a supervisor for the project at APAH.

APAH is seeing an increase in need among students in south Arlington and a decreased need among north Arlington students, McElwee said.

Donations can take the form of checks, gift cards, or the supplies themselves. They are:

  • new backpacks
  • spiral or composition notebooks
  • binders
  • loose-leaf and graph paper
  • pencil sharpeners
  • #2 pencils
  • pens
  • pocket folders
  • crayons
  • colored pencils
  • markers
  • highlighters
  • glue sticks
  • school scissors
  • whiteout
  • erasers.

APAH is asking that all donations be delivered to their offices at 2704 N. Pershing Dr, Arlington, VA 22201 by Aug. 25 in order to give time to get the supplies to students before the first day of Arlington public school on Sept. 4.

Affordable Housing for Students?

Speaking of students, where is affordable housing for graduate students? In fact, APAH gentrifies students out of affordable market rate housing, e.g., Howard Manor.
