County board Green Party candidate Audrey Clement has added her voice to that of Republican Matt Wavro who yesterday called on the county board to consider articulated buses over the rails-in-the-road streetcars.

Clement, however, prefers the London-style double-deck bus.

I agree with my Republican opponent, Matt Wavro, on the need to scrap the Pike trolley in favor of upgraded bus service. However, I prefer compact double-deck buses, like those that are being introduced into service in London, rather than articulated buses, on the Pike's congested roadway.

Where Wavro's argument tended toward the side of wanting the flexibility of connecting the Pike to Rosslyn without the Metro's blue line train, Clement cited the safety hazards for cyclists trying to maneuver around the tracks.

She also fears that the streetcar will raise housing rates too much along the Pike and quickly gentrify one of the county's more diverse areas.

Both candidates dislike the cost of the streetcar, about $200 million for Arlington County's portion. They face Libby Garvey in the general election in November.

Lock Up the Fraudsters

I will be willing to swear out a criminal complaint against whatever fraudsters submit a fraudulent grant application to the USDOT for federal funding of the Pike streetcar system.

County Board Defrauding Taxpayers, USDOT

Bogus so-called Pike 'alternatives analysis' is a big fraud on Arlington taxpayers and the U.S. DOT who the County Board is going to ask to fund their pet trolley project.

Please Show All Pike Transit Options

I agree with Audrey Clement. We have not been shown any bus options. Can we seen what the new London double deck buses look like?
