A couple of years ago, it seems like I could wave my magic wand and say, “Mulch please, bill me later.” In about a week I’d have a load of mulch in my driveway. Those days are long gone.
When I called the county in 2011, I was told I’d have to wait two months for mulch. I protested the long wait, by refusing to mulch. Sometimes you just have to stand up for what you believe in.
This year I ordered my mulch in March for my prompt May 5th delivery date. I’m a go-getter, so I ordered a full truckload of mulch.
You shouldn’t rush into spreading mulch; it’s best to think long and hard about where to put that stuff. I wracked my brain about this issue. I watched “Curb Appeal,” and wandered the neighborhood looking at mulched yards. Finally I decided to put the mulch in the flower beds.
About a month after my flower bed decision, I pulled out the wheel barrel and mulched away. If you’re trying to drop a few pounds, try mulching on a really hot day. Two days and four pounds lighter, I finished mulching the yard.
I still had a little bit of mulch left and pondered what to do with it. Thankfully a brilliant idea popped into my head. You may want to write this one down and save it for when you have some extra mulch.
A fun thing to do with mulch… in your front yard set up a few rectangular mounds of mulch and put a tomb stone at the head of each mound. Not only will your yard look like a graveyard, but your neighbors will get a good laugh. The neighbors laughing the hardest will probably be the ones trying to sell their houses.
The next time you mulch, call ahead, plan your mulching strategy, and save a little for some mulching fun!
