Steve,

I just wanted to drop you a note of appreciation for your coverage of the board vote yesterday (APS Board Votes Violand-Sanchez Chair).

I think it is one more reason for which we can be proud of Arlington.  We know we still have work to do but it is heartwarming to know that folks are willing to do it in order to keep Arlington a great place to live.

I wanted to share with you the message that was sent out to the Arlington Latino Network yesterday, as well as copy of the ALN statement made at the board meeting.  I have translated the message below:

Dear ALN community

Thank you for making your voices heard on the tradition of rotation for selecting the Chair of the board.  The board chose to abide by the tradition and elected Dr. Emma Violand-Sanchez as the Chair for the 2012-13 year.  James Lander nominated her and he delivered a brilliant speech that asks us to continue working in unity for the benefit of our students and our community.  His support to Emma during these past two weeks was very important and it will continue to be throughout the year.

Abby Raphael also delivered an excellent speech in which she detailed the many accomplishments of the board during her 2011-12 leadership.  We thank her for her sensibility towards our Latino voice, her leadership and good judgement to support Emma in rotating into the Chair position.  I hope you send Abby Raphael a note of appreciation for hearing our voices.

The Latino and the African American community grew close during the past two weeks and we hope to continue working together to focus on our students who are among the lowest performing groups.  We have much work to be done.
