Melissa Bondi

Melissa Bondi answered many questions at a candidates’ forum last night, but the one that she did not answer, at least not directly, is the one on many people’s minds: did she get letters from the IRS telling her that she owed back taxes and what did she do with them if she did?

The question did not come during the forum hosted by Patch.com and Arlington Independent Media, which will be broadcast on the cable channel this week, but in a hasty interview after the debate as she attempted to leave the building.

In a room a few feet from the AIM studio, Bondi who is seeking the Democratic nomination for county board, reiterated what has already been reported in the Mercury and elsewhere, that she found out about the lien when it was posted online and that the first thing she did was call the IRS and ask for all the documents regarding her case.

In that lien, the IRS claims that she owes nearly $20,000 in income tax from the 2005 and 2006 tax years.

“I believe it is an error by the IRS,” she said.

IRS procedures say that before issuing the lien, it sends warning letters, and sometimes make phone calls to people the agency believes owe taxes.

Under federal law, the IRS may not speak about any specific case, so the IRS could not confirm or deny that letters were sent. However, the agency can supply basic rules and guidelines, said Mark Hanson with IRS Media Relations.

Bondi confirmed that the address listed on the lien is hers, but when pressed about whether she received IRS warning letters, she said she was waiting to see what is in the IRS file.

The problem has been plaguing Bondi and her campaign since the lien was revealed Sunday night on the Arlington Yupette blog. Along with the lien that was filed in the Arlington/Falls Church Circuit Court, a FOIA request by a local activist exposed that Bondi had been delinquent when paying her personal property taxes on her car in 2004 and 2005.

“We had to pursue her and to threaten to seize her car,” Arlington County Treasurer Frank O’Leary (D) said in an interview Wednesday. It took three or four notices sent to Bondi, but “At that point she did pay.”

He said his office sends out about 155,000 tax bills annually and pursues 4,000 to 5,000 delinquent payers, about 3 percent. The county considers someone who is two weeks late to be delinquent. Kim Klingler, who is also running for the Democratic nomination, paid her personal property taxes late by a few days on two occasions, according to the documents provided by O’Leary’s office.

Glad this caucus is DONE. Taxes gotta be paid--it's that simple. Ms. Bndi has a pattern of local & fed tax problems, but most of all, she didn't answer questions straight out, & we have enough pols like that. As far as local politicians & 1 school board member who endorsed Bondi, they needed to ask her to step aside, withdraw from the race, but they didn't. That's a negative reflection on all of them--Ferguson, Tejada, & Zimmerman especially. What was more important in this race--friendship or Arlington?

  • Bondi Should GO

She is a liar. Why is she even still on the "ticket"? Oh that's right because of Chris Zimmerman. He needs to go as well.

  • Melissa's tax problems

I, for one, have had issues with the IRS. A few years ago, I thought my TDA income had been taxed when I received it. Big surprise. Didn't happen. Yes, the IRS sends notices, years after the fact. Have you ever tried to talk to them? They are right, you are wrong. Always. The only difference is that now they have to be nice when they talk to you...it is still the same strong arm.
I support Melissa. She helped a neighborhood and a lot of its tenants stay in place. I worked with her on the Save Buckingham Coalition and through all of the committees and meetings that evolved into the MOU and affordable housing for Buckingham.
Melissa has always been a voice for the least of us. Those of us who aren't the Yuppies of the County. She made our voice count and worked tirelessly on committee after committee, night after night, month after month, year after year. She helped us save what we could of Buckingham.
Furthermore, if one is going to post on the Arlington Yuppette blog, sign your name. Anonymous? Why? Are you afraid of your neighbors? Don't want your co workers and friends to know that you are the cretin that made snide, nasty and derogatory comments? Worse yet, maybe you disagree with them and hide behind anonymous. I
I like Melissa and believe in her. I have no vote in Arlington; but based on my experience with her; I would support her for a Board position.
And I am not afraid to sign my name.

  • Really?

This does not add up. With the 'non-answer' that we've received, you have to assume she has received the numerous notices that are customary before the IRS places a lien. This is not my area of expertise but I come from a family of CPAs and they tell me that there's no way this sort of thing just "pops up."
