I'm originally from northern New York, just outside the six million acre Adirondack Park. Irene missed us in Arlington, mostly (not to belittle the problems the storm caused for many), but blasted the small hamlet of Keene, a village with one small main strip through town. Here's a story in the local Plattsburgh Press-Republican. This sort of thing destroys economies up there, where in good years, the economy is slow.
