Elda Chavez used bubbles to drum up a little business during the rainy Buckingham Festival, Sunday. "I'm hoping they're coming late," she said of the customers. "But, you know, God decided. It'll be OK."
Rain nearly cancelled the Buckingham Festival on Sunday.
"Second year in a row," said Lois Athey, an organizer of the 12th annual event.
In the past the event has drawn hundreds of people, many vendors, and various service providers, everything from legal services to voter registration.
Each year, the county closes N. Pershing Drive between N. Glebe and Thomas streets. Vendors and restaurants set-up canopies. Children play games in the street. Each year there is a raffle and scholarship winners are announced.
The early rain subdued the turnout and kept people under their individual canopies. The rain eventually tapered off enough for people to shop and buy food.
The Buckingham Tenants Association (BU-GATA), the Buckingham Youth Brigade, and the 2010 Census were listed as sponsors of the event.
