Arlington County Republican Committee Chair Charles Hokanson, left, stands with Vice-Chair Ian Meyeroff. "I think things are just ramping up," Hokanson said of the campaign season. The ACRC will be working a lot at both the state and federal level and helping out on the Matt Wavro campaign for county board, he said.

With Labor Day comes the unofficial start of the real campaign season, or so conventional wisdom says. People who have not been paying attention to politics all summer, will start after the kids go back to school next week.

If that is the case, Arlingtonians will have plenty to choose from.

Last night, the Arlington County Republican Committee held a party at Ri Ra in Clarendon to watch and celebrate as presidential candidate Mitt Romney officially took the mantle of leadership for the Republican Party. See our slideshow for more on this.

Last night, Republican Matt Wavro, who is running for a seat on the Arlington County Board, said he has at least six debates in the coming weeks. (The Mercury will have days and times on our event calendar soon.)

The first of those debates is the Arlington Civic Federation Candidate Forum this Tuesday at Virginia Hospital Center’s Hazel Auditorium, 7:30p.m. According to Civic Federation President James Schroll, nine candidates for various offices have confirmed they will be there. They will have a chance to speak and will take questions from federation delegates. See the list of candidates below.

On Labor Day, the Democrats will labor over the stove and come together for their annual Joint Campaign Chili Cook-off. This year’s celebration includes a pie-eating contest. Our photographer Gerald Martineau will be there to shoot the scene and tell us which chili takes the cake--er--pie.

For about 11,000 registered voters, Tuesday is election day (see our story and listen to interviews). Five precincts in Arlington, south and west of the Pentagon, will head to the polls for a special election in the House of Delegate’s 45th District. In-person absentee voting for that race continues through Saturday. The five precincts: Abingdon, Aurora Hills, Fairlington, Oakridge (a portion of this district is represented by 49th District), and Shirlington.

According to the Civic Federation, the following candidates have confirmed they will attend the candidate forum on Tuesday:

U.S. House of Representatives, 8th District

  • Jason Howell (I)
  • Jim Moran (D)
  • Patrick Murray (R)
  • Janet Murphy (IG)

Arlington County Board

  • Audrey Clement (G)
  • Libby Garvey (D)
  • Matt Wavro (R)

Arlington County School Board

  • Noah Simon
  • Emma Violand-Sanchez

Who's the Democrat?

Who's the Democrat running for County Board? When it comes to social issues Matt Wavro is ahead of Libby Garvey, who is voting for massive gentrification through massive redevelopment and affordable housing that isn't affordable as 'bonus density'.

No Vision

None of the three County Board candidates has a vision for Arlington. Laundry lists are not vision statements.
