Many of the gravestones, such as this ornate one, in the Calloway United Methodist Church cemetery either never had names engraved, or the names and dates worn away. "The cherub represents a heaven-bound soul or spiritual resurrection. Typically found on children’s headstones," the county's report says.
County and church leaders have determined that about 100 graves remain on the site just feet from Lee Highway, though many do not have headstones. Many parishoners of Calloway United Methodist Church maintain the sites and decorate the graves of family. The oldest stone with a date is from 1891, but some graves may be older.
