MACHINES FOR LIVING features the work of five emerging artists—Megan Mueller, Mathew Smith, Si Jae Byun, Hedieh Ilchi and Jenny Sidhu Mullins—each dissecting their own modern world of machines. The show, curated by Jenny Mullins and featuring a wide range of mediums from traditional painting to inflatable installation, walks down the meandering labyrinth of today’s gadget driven culture and questions the complicated relationship our society has with machines. Whether talking about cell phones, texting, strip malls or theme parks, how have these devices affected our relationship to the “natural world” and to each other? Through a wide array of approaches, mediums and outcomes, each artist attempts to tackle these bitter-sweet and pervasive issues, achieving vastly differing and ultimately human results.
