Longtime civic activist Charlie Rinker was presented with the third annual Ellen Bozman award on Sunday.  The award, presented by the Alliance for Housing Solutions, celebrates the work of Ellen Bozman, a long-time county board member and civic leader.

According to the press materials sent by the AHS:

Charlie served several terms as a Housing Commissioner on the Citizens Advisory Commission to the County Board.  As a Commissioner, his was a critical voice in negotiating affordable housing benefits with developers prior to the ordinance.  He was an active participant in the Affordable Housing roundtable discussions that led to the creation and adoption of Arlington County’s Affordable Housing Goals and Targets.  Charlie was a leader of coalition efforts to save both Arna Valley and Buckingham from exclusive high-end redevelopment...He is also a founding member and President of the Arlington New Directions Coalition (ANDC).

In the words of one nominator: “Charlie has been a leader in Arlington County’s efforts to remain a socio-economically diverse community and to make housing available to households across the income spectrum.  For years, Charlie has been active in crafting policies and programs, pursuing affordable housing projects and publicly making the case for the County to spend resources on creating affordable housing…Through his years of advocacy, his efforts to found and bolster community organizations, his policy initiatives and his recruiting of like-minded individuals to serve the public good, Charlie Rinker has left an indelible mark on Arlington’s affordable housing efforts and has been instrumental in allowing Arlington to achieve its potential as a caring and inclusive community.”

The awards presentation was held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, 4444 Arlington Blvd.
