About

The Millennium Project at Arlington National Cemetery is controversial because it would add tens of thousands of burial sites to the cemetery but remove nearly 1,000 trees in the process.

When first envisioned in 2012, the project would have removed 890 trees, many dating back to the Civil War when the cemetery was first created. The Army Corp. of Engineers changed the project in 2013 so that 800 trees were removed.

Although Arlington County has no direct effect on the cemetery, commissions and committees have lined up against the removal of the trees and have other environmental concerns.
