Lander, Kanninen Debate

In a cordial "debate" at the Arlington County Democratic Committee meeting last night, APS Board incumbent James Lander focused on his experience on the board and on building relationships in the community while challenger Barbara Kanninen focused on the need for mentors in the schools and for better enrollment data. Both candidates are Democrats who took turns politely answering questions--Arlington's debates are often more Q&A sessions than verbal slugfests, and last night was no different.

Lander said that all parents who wish it, will be able to bus children to school in the coming year and that he no longer supports the county's affiliation with Fairfax schools' Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Kanninen said the opportunity for students to study at the competitive school is too great to throw away.

She focused on the need for mentors to help the most disadvantaged youth see a path to success. She also said that the county is using outdated methods to track enrollment.

Both are seeking the endorsement of the party. Democrats may vote in a two-day caucus next week, May 9 and 11.

Another Charade

We are going from bad to worse to worst...from a non-partisan office being politicized, to a political party running the candidate selection process, to the media covering the political party's selection process.
